" Where There’s a Woman and Childern With

“Where There’s a Woman and Children with a Will,

                                            There’s a Way”

Last December, Laguna Beach, CA resident Rosalind Russell started a unique program to help the people of Nepal. This third-world country has a population of about 25 million people. More than 75% live in poverty. Many earn less than $1.00 a day. Fighting poverty with goats for women and children is what Russell’s program is all about; and it is working beyond all expectations! With donations from caring people in the United States and abroad, Rosalind personally goes into some of Nepal’s more prosperous villages and buys dozens of goats, mostly pregnant. She delivers them to impoverished villages, some of which are populated by Maoist insurgents, making it dangerous for her to be there.

Two goats are given to each woman in the village who wish to be part of the project. The women must agree not to kill the goats for two years. They are also given instructions on how to care for the goats so that they will provide them with not only milk and cheese, but also healthy goats for the purpose of selling.

For many women it has meant a step out of poverty and a way to help themselves, their families and village. The program is a huge success and Rosalind wants to return to Nepal again this January duplicating what was done along with providing goats for the women in two more villages. Each goat costs $125.00 to place in the village.

More recently, Russell has embarked upon another mission: gathering funds for a school to be built in Ojhetar, one of the villages in which she spent time distributing goats and helping the villagers last December.  This is a more ambitious undertaking and perhaps even more far-reaching in striving to reverse centuries of denied opportunities for education among the poorest of Nepal’s citizens.

This is a golden opportunity for anyone who wants to give where they know it is making a difference.   Russell personally oversees each goat purchase and delivery and the whole process is documented by the news media in Nepal, as well as by the government. Donations are tax deductible through R Star Foundation, (a 501© 3 status since 1997). If you or your group would like more information or are interested in purchasing a goat or contributing to the proposed school project, please contact:
